Yusen Logistics Launches New Green Solution to Allocate Environmental Benefits - Support Customers to Reduce Scope 3 Emissions in Ocean, Air and Land Freight
Yusen Logistics Global Management Co., Ltd. (CEO: Hiroki Harada) is pleased to announce our new green solution, "Alternative Fuel", which delivers environmental benefits achieved through the use of sustainable fuels⁽*¹⁾ to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in ocean, air and land transport services. To create a sustainable supply chain, we will support our customers in reducing their Scope 3 emissions and advance our initiative to use renewable fuels.
In December 2024, the Yusen Logistics Group introduced a digital platform to manage and allocate to our esteemed customers GHG savings achieved by using non-fossil fuels instead of conventional fossil fuels. Following our initial air freight forwarding service utilizing SAF⁽*²⁾, we have now begun allocating GHG savings through this platform for ocean and land shipments. Our "Alternative Fuel" provides a one-stop solution for all transport modes of ocean, air, and land.
For land freight, Yusen Logistics actively creates environmental values as a transport operator by using sustainable fuels, for instance, HVO (Hydro-treated Vegetable Oil) to power our own trucks in some countries and regions. The GHG savings achieved by each transport mode can be allocated to the same transport service across the 46 countries and regions of our global network, regardless of where the renewable fuel is used.
Through this platform, customers can monitor details - the location where the alternative fuel was consumed, the type of fuel used, and the amount of GHG emissions reduced. Additionally, along with the allocation of GHG savings, we also provide GHG emissions reductions certificates verified by a third-party certification organization.
Process for Allocating GHG savings
STEP 1 (Check)
With the transport performance to date, we measure and analyze the customer's GHG emissions to provide enhanced visibility. We propose the optimal transport method and support to achieve the customer's GHG emission reduction goals.
STEP 2 (Choose)
We procure the environmental benefits necessary to reduce GHG emissions from airlines and ocean shipping companies according to the customer's GHG emission reduction targets. For land transport, we also create the GHG savings as a transport operator.
STEP 3 (Reduced)
Yusen Logistics delivers environmental benefits to customers and provides GHG emissions reductions certificates. The entire process, from calculating GHG emissions to allocating, is verified by a third-party certification organization to ensure the platform's reliability and transparency.
The Yusen Logistics Group, as a sustainable solutions provider, provides high-quality services and have submitted a commitment letter to SBTi⁽*³⁾, and are working on creating a environmentally responsible supply chain worldwide. We will strive for solving global environment and social issues through business by building closer relationships and ties across the world with stakeholders to realize a sustainable society.
⁽*¹⁾Fuels derived from renewable resources, including non-edible plants and used cooking oil, instead of fossil fuels such as oil and coal.
⁽*²⁾"Yusen Book-and-Claim", released in April 2023, is now available as "Alternative Fuels" from May 2025.
⁽*³⁾Science Based Targets initiative. An international organization that evaluates corporation's GHG emission reduction targets based on scientific evidence.
